NW Briefs | Washington men’s soccer hosts NCAA opener
The Washington men’s soccer team will host Portland at 6 p.m. tonight at Husky Soccer Field in a first-round NCAA tournament game. The winner will play at UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a spot in the Sweet 16.
This is the eighth time the Huskies have faced Portland in the NCAA tournament. The teams met earlier this year in the regular season, with Washington winning 1-0.
The Huskies finished fifth in the Pac-10 with a 3-4-3 conference record, and are 8-7-4 overall. The Huskies are one of three Pac-10 teams in the tournament, joining league champion California and UCLA.
The Huskies are led by Ely Allen, the Pac-10’s co-player of the year. Allen, a senior forward, led the Pac-10 with 24 points and 11 goals.
Portland is 10-5-5 overall and finished third in the West Coast Conference with a 6-2-4 mark.
