MRSA fears close Edmonds school
A Catholic school in Edmonds is closed until Tuesday over concerns about a drug-resistant staph infection.
Holy Rosary School in Edmonds shut down Wednesday after a parent reported that his or her child had contracted methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. School officials said that diagnosis turned out to be incorrect, but a second child there was suspected of having the infection.
The Rev. Kenneth Haydock, pastor of the 266-student primary school and church of the same name, said the school would be professionally cleaned and sanitized.
“Children’s health is our paramount concern,” he said.
The school sent letters home from the Snohomish Health District advising families to watch for cuts or scratches that quickly grow larger and don’t heal.
Three cases in Port Townsend over the past week resulted in the closure of a preschool and a high-school athletic facility.
