NW Briefs | SPU women clinch GNAC soccer title

BILLINGS, Mont. - Meredith Teague scored a goal and assisted on another as the second-ranked Seattle Pacific women’s soccer team clinched its sixth Great Northwest Athletic Conference title, winning 2-0 at Montana State Billings on Saturday.

The victory assured the Falcons (19-0, 13-0) of their sixth GNAC title in the last seven years.

Teague picked up her team-leading 13th assist of the season when Claire Grubbs put away her corner kick in the 25th minute.

Other women’s soccer

Seattle University outshot Northwest Nazarene 29-1 and still needed two late goals to rally for a 2-1 victory at Championship Field.

With less than 12 minutes left, Jasmine Wilson collected her fourth goal of the season and give Seattle (16-3, 11-2 GNAC) the lead.

• Lucy Miller headed in the game-winner in the 105th minute, lifting Western Washington (11-6-1, 6-5-1 GNAC) over Saint Martin’s (2-16, 1-11) 1-0 in Bellingham.

• Kaycie Hutchins scored in the 27th minute for Central Washington (6-9-4, 3-7-2 GNAC), which finished tied 1-1 with Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore.

Men’s soccer

Dustin Lemley scored the game’s lone goal as Incarnate Word (Texas) beat Seattle Pacific (7-5-6) in nonleague action at Interbay Stadium.

• Gibson Bardsley had two goals and an assist as Western Washington (12-6-1, 3-3-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Martin (3-16, 0-8) 5-1 in Bellingham.

• Amos Freiheit scored three goals to lead Northwest University (6-12, 5-9 Cascade Conference) past Northwest Christian College 4-1 in Kirkland.

Volleyball

Central Washington (10-13, 9-5 GNAC) used an 8-3 run in Game 3 to put away Seattle University 30-23, 30-21, 30-25 in Ellensburg. The Redhawks fall to 10-13, 7-8.

• Western Washington (17-4, 13-1 GNAC) posted a 30-16, 30-23, 30-16 victory over Montana State Billings in Bellingham.

• Becky Jones collected her 42nd career double-double with 14 kills and 15 digs for Gonzaga (16-9, 4-5), which snapped a two-match West Coast Conference skid with a 30-23, 25-30, 30-27, 30-14 victory over Saint Mary’s in Spokane.

• Eastern Washington moved to 9-3 in Big Sky Conference play with a 30-15, 24-30, 30-21, 30-20 victory over Montana State.

• Seattle Pacific (13-9, 8-6 GNAC) defeated Alaska Anchorage 30-15, 30-19, 29-31, 30-18 at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex in Anchorage.

Cross country

The Washington women tied for third and the men finished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships, run on the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore.

The Stanford women won their 12th title in a row, while Oregon took the men’s championship. Washington State’s women were fifth, and the Cougars men seventh.

The Huskies were led by Anita Campbell (women, sixth, 20 minutes, 10.9 seconds) and Jon Harding (men, 20th, 23:34.1).

The Cougars were led by Isley Gonzalez (women, eighth, 20:26.6) and Andrew Jones (men, 23rd, 23:42.4).

• The Gonzaga women (192 points) finished sixth and the men seventh (176) at the WCC championship in Belmont, Calif.

Swimming

The Washington State women won 11 of 16 events on the way to a 170.5-81.5 victory over host San Jose State.

Men’s basketball

Michael Knight had 19 points off the bench to lead Seattle University to a 103-81 victory over the Washington Athletic Club in its exhibition opener at the Connolly Center.
